Basics On Breast Implants Merrillville Indiana Residents Should Know

By Daphne Bowen

Breast augmentation surgery (also known as mammoplasty) is the enlargement of breast size through addition of synthetic materials or natural tissues. The implants used may be inserted in one or both breasts to achieve symmetry. There has been a steady increase in the number of these operations thanks to the huge media influence that exits. There are a number of important things relating to the insertion of breast implants Merrillville Indiana residents may find helpful.

There are a number of situations during which implants may be required. Losing a lot of weight in a short period of time results in lose skin around the breasts. Sagging often follows. Using implants will help increase the fullness and restore normalcy. Transitioning from a pregnancy period causes similar effects. Congenital abnormalities may result into disproportionate mammary gland sizes. Filling the smaller gland helps achieve the symmetry.

There are two main type of implants that are being used currently. The basic structure for the two is the same. The difference comes with the filling fluid used. The first type is one that is prefilled with silicone gel. The main advantage of the gel is the fact that it provides a near natural consistency. Its downside is its rigidity that requires the surgeon to make a large surgical incision.

The other type uses neutral saline. With this type, the empty shell is placed in position first before being filled with the saline. This gives it a huge advantage over the saline type in that it is easily malleable. Smaller incisions can be made and the resultant scar is less conspicuous. Its disadvantage is that it cannot be used in women younger than 22 years.

The type of surgical technique used is dependent on factors such as patient preference, surgical skill and type of implant available. Commonly, surgeons make an incision on the area just above the breast crease. A pocket is created to allow for the placement of the insert. An alternative approach is on the area around the areola. There are also accounts of surgeons who have achieved the same by adopting an approach through the axilla.

You need to be aware of risks and complications involved. Some of these are similar to those seen with other operations. For instance, persons that are undergoing these types of surgeries are at risk of excessive bleeding and infections especially in the immediate postoperative period. Pain is a common complaint but tends to subside with time. Perhaps the biggest complication is the possibility of leakage and rupture.

Rupture may take a while before it is noticed depending on the degree of leakage. This is especially the case for the silicone inserts which tend to remain trapped within the fibrous tissues. There are no health risks associated with silicone leakage. The main indication that rupture may have taken place is change in the shape of tissue and pain. Saline may also leak without any major complications as it will be absorbed by the body.

There have been claims that implants increase the likelihood of cancer. This as has been found out is not entirely true. What is true is that the diagnosis of preexisting or new lesions may be difficult to some extent. These lesions are obscured and may be difficult to pick on radiological images.
